They also run interhouse tournaments in these activities. Assemblies carrying the Olympic and Paralympic theme and their associated Values are delivered to all students in the academy. The local wheelchair basketball club Leicester Cobras have ran workshops for students and current or former Paralympic athletes have given presentations. The school also runs Paralympic themed house matches.

    Dundonald Primary thoroughly deserved their visit from Olympic Mascot Wenlock after they revamped their sports day to incorporate the Olympic and Paralympic Values and made the day more inclusive. Wenlock had a great day- he joined a whole school assembly and loved presenting pupils with Values Certificates for living one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic Values on the school sports day. Wenlock later took part in the sports festival- learning judo and cricket and even cheering on dance competitions. He made lots of new friends and had a great time in Northern Ireland!

In July 2008 Hannah organised a multi sport festival based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values. She involved more than 200 students of all ages. This year she is planning to invite local primary school children to a 'Dance Factor' event!

    Twenty young leaders and Young Ambassadors, Reglan and Will, held a Year 4 Multi-skills Festival at Haygrove School in Somerset. Sixty pupils from six local primary schools took part in eight events including hockey, basketball, tri-golf, hurdles, sprinting and long jump. The pupils' aim was to achieve 1000 points by counting up the amount of baskets they scored, centimetres they jumped, hockey goals, tri-golf points scored and the number of seconds they ran in the sprint and hurdles event!

Tuxford are sharing their experiences with Colegio Estadual Humberto Mendes in Brazil, who are running a similar project to help their students get better at maths.

    Lizzie is one of the most motivated and determined pupils that I have met. She does her absolute best at everything she undertakes. While she is an all rounder blessed with many talents she doesnt take these for granted and works hard to seize all opportunities. Lizzie is disciplined in her swimming training (18 hours per week) and she always strives to improve. She has 8 county times and her regioanl time in the 200m breaststroke ranks her 13th in the region. She has won the U16 Lyme Regis Fun Run and was 1st in the U13 Open Water CobbSwim. Lizzie also sings and plays the piano(Grade 4) and writes poetry. Lizzie balances her time as an academic scholar and a competitive swimmer with zest. Lizzie is deserving of this honour and she does all this in good spirits and always with a smile on her face.

When he smiles, he can light up the room. Hugh is the perfect candidate to represent the school as an Olympic Torch Bearer. He would not only be doing this for himself but also for his family. Hugh and his older sister have achieved and maintained normal school life whilst supporting their brother through his fight and on-going treatment of cancer. This has shown the strength and determination of his character to try to maintain a normal life during this difficult time. This takes courage of someone so young. He truly is an inspiration to his peers.

    During the course of this year a pupil, who had left his previous school due to bullying issues, joined our school. When he arrived at the school this pupil had a clear lack of confidence and was very nervous. Without any prompting, Liam took the pupil 'under his wing' and ensured he has settled into our school. This new pupil has now higher self-esteem of himself and a circle of friends, both of which he did not have previously. This is only possible because of the friendship shown by Liam. Within the classroom Liam has forged excellent relationships with his teachers, whom he clearly respects, and he is continually producing work of the highest quality. Liam is also a well-respected member of the school football team- a sport he excels in and enjoys. Liam is a pupil who is well liked and respected by staff and students.

    At Hordle Primary, the whole school is dividing up to represent 10 countries. They are going to make a large flag for their chosen country. They then plan on composing a few lines to sing along to the mascot song On A Rainbow Olympic to record and edit so that the whole school are miming in the video. They will also make non-fiction books based on a country, and have a sharing assembly at the end of the day, where children can find out about the other countries.

    From his first day in St. Colms Jon identified himself as a remarkable young man. He excelled during our induction/team building day. He displayed qualities of mutual respect, friendship, kindness and empathy with his new classmates. He is often the first to volunteer to help with any activity both inside and outside the classroom. In his Science recycling project he produced a compost container for food waste. He made a presentation to the whole class demonstrating confidence and enthusiasm for the task. His peers voted him the overall winner. Jon is a keen sportsman, he signed up for our Under 14 Hurling team. He attended all training sessions working very hard to be the best he could be. Jon played a vital role in the success of this team reaching the Ulster Colleges Final. He always has a smile and a pleasant word for all.

To see him out on the rugby pitch is enlightening for everyone, the way he does push himself to keep up with all the able bodied students and thoroughly enjoys himself while doing it. He gives 100% at all times, never complains, is appreciative of any help and support he gets and is truly inspirational to us of how a positive attitude means you can triumph over any adversity. He is accepting of his disability and works with it to ensure he gets out of life, he gets on with having a good time with his friends and giving his all in lessons. He is a truly wonderful young man.

    City College Norwich staged a spectacular Wind, Water and Wheels event for the local community outside Chapelfield Shopping Centre in July 2009 as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend. Students from the College encouraged members of the public to think about their health and fitness, giving visitors and shoppers the opportunity to have their Body Mass Index (BMI) measured, take a handheld body fat test, have their blood pressure tested and undergo a general fitness check. The main emphasis was on having fun and finding out about new activities for a healthier and more active lifestyle!

    The programme involved the initial set up of a Student Olympic Committee who had the task of planning, organising and running the swimming gala. The event was targeted at Year 7 students from secondary schools across Lincoln. The students made contact with a variety of outside agencies to help with the smooth running of the event. The students also managed to secure a visit from former Olympic medal winner Adam Whitehead, adding the wow factor to the event and showing a great deal of innovative thought! Participants at the gala took part in a number of challenges testing their teamwork and communication skills.

    In September 2011 Callum was savagely attacked by a dog. The dog bit at Callum%u2019s hands and chest and, when Callum fell while trying to get away, the dog viciously mauled his head. Callum had to have 46 stitches in the back and side of his head and 23 stitches in his face. Despite the psychological effects of the attack, and still being in considerable discomfort, Callum returned to school after just two weeks. He was determined not to let the incident have a negative effect on his life and wanted to return to normal, and his studies, as soon as possible. Callum did this successfully - his assessments reflect maximum effort in lessons and commendable achievement. Callum states that he feels inspired by the determination of the Olympic athletes to succeed, and by the Paralympic team who he feels don%u2019t let their problems get in the way of what they want. Callum is committed to Sport being a keen footballer %u2013 he plays for the school Y7 team and for the %u2018Hall Road Rangers%u2019 outside school. Callum%u2019s Head of House states, %u201CCallum is always smiling, caring and kind. He continues to inspire me and his peers. It would be great to see this young man rewarded for demonstrating such resilience through very difficult times.%u201D

  50. A student run Olympic and Paralympic carnival in Hackney

    A group of students from Skinners Company School for Girls in Hackney ran and organised an Olympic themed carnival for over 150 of their local primary school pupils. The event celebrated the ethnically diverse mix of the Hackney area, whilst teaching pupils about the Olympic and Paralympic Values. A number of workshops were run on the day by the students to develop enterprise skills and capabilities. These included: an Olympic trade fair, a mini Paralympics and a cultural exhibition.

This idea earned Highcliffe School third place in the 2008 Make Your Mark Challenge!

    Abbie is an amiable and hardworking pupil who is always positive in her outlook towards life and sport. She has respect for herself, her peers and her teachers and is always willing to help others who are less able than herself. Abbie regularly represents the school in netball and plays tennis outside of school. She knows how to give her best and how important health and fitness are. She is a well liked and respected member of the school and has excellent relationships with her peers. Despite being young, Abbie is already showing excellent leadership skills and is confident when working individually, as part of a group and leading and organising sessions. Abbie's father was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer and she has shown great courage when dealing with this. She remains positive and dedicated to her education and to her sports.

    Andwinese, a Young Ambassador from Old-field School in Bath, got creative with a team of other students to produce a photo montage of different sporting activities that spanned 1000 hours! The montage showed a whole range of sports, including dance, athletics, netball, hockey, football, and judo, with back and white sporting images used to highlight the number 1000.

    Luke is an extremely determined and courageous student who constantly strives for excellence. Since joining Magnus School in September he has trained hard and represented the school extensively at both rugby and football. He works hard in all lessons across the school and has proven a quiet yet well respected role model amongst his friends and peers. Luke manages to support everything the school has to offer; particularly within PE and Sport, on top of his considerable commitments for Lincoln City Football Academy and the challenges he faces with regular trips to hospital for skin graft treatments to his head. Take this week for example, on top of his usual football academy training and matches he has fully engaged in our January running by returning to the school fields each night to complete lap after lap of the course. If that was not enough, he is also due in London for the day on Thursday to have yet another operation. Luke deserves this opportunity, not only for his on-going achievements despite the challenges he faces but, most importantly, for the modest and undiscerning manner in which he continues to do so.

    Seascale School will be celebrating World Sport Day by inviting parents and members of the local community to a special event called 'Let's Celebrate'. They have held this event for the past two years, but this year they will adapt the day to make it more relevant to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The children are in coloured sports teams which have been given country names. They will hold an opening ceremony parade of all athletes (aka children!) outside in the school grounds. The children will compete in track and field events and parents will spectate with flags and banners to support the different teams.

At the Minster 24 year 10 and 11 students have started a sports leadership award while in Brazil students have been learning how to referee and how to build sports equipment from recycled materials.

    Mandeville had a fantastic visit to Hereford 6th Form College on 2nd July. The College won their visit following the launch of their Leadership Academy which encourages students to assist with local sporting events in the community. One of their projects is organising and running the Hereford Youth Games- held on the day of Mandeville's special visit! Students worked hard in planning the event to live the Values- they invited all the Primary schools in the County and had over 1,300 pupils attend the day- brilliant! Mandeville enjoyed awarding pledge certificates to pupils and joined in with the warm-up as the children prepared to compete. Over 80 volunteers from surrounding secondary schools and the community helped run the day- an incredible effort.

    A whole team of Young Ambassadors, led by Marta, Joshua and Joanna, have been helping children across their Partnership to 'live the Olympic and Paralympic Values'.     Ashlyn strives to achieve her best possible performance in all areas of sport and PE. She is captain of both the netball and hockey teams and is always prepared to encourage those around her. She is an extremely gifted sportswoman but she is also very modest and always prepared to listen to advice. She is a very popular student amongst her peers and she is very respectful both of peers and to her teachers. As captain of netball and hockey she can always be relied upon to fulfil her role with efficiency and enthusiasm. Ashlyn has also achieved a high standard of performance in athletics where she has demonstrated an all round ability in both track and field events. Ashlyn is an extremely positive pupil who thoroughly deserves this opportunity.

    16 A level geography students had a behind the scenes tour of the London 2012 Olympic Park. The tour was one of the highlights of a week long geography summer school run by the Royal Geographical Society. This scheme gives students, who have never had such opportunities before, the chance to experience high quality fieldwork. Harry Mooney from All Saints Catholic School in Dagenham said seeing the site first hand was 'something you don't get to see everyday, how they are building it and the vast scale of it. I felt excited seeing it happen and I'm looking forward to seeing the Games and being able to use the facilities afterwards. I will be able to incorporate this research into my geography studies next year.'

    Kai has had a variety of set backs in his young life including asthma, eczema and various hospital visits following an operation to remove one of his kidneys in 2004. None of this seems to get to him, and he continues to approach sport and exercise (indeed all aspects of school life) with hard work and determination. Despite these set backs, Kai has attended every games session, where he gives 100% to everything he does. He asked to join rugby training where he enjoys the skills sessions, despite the fact he will never get to play, as he is not able to participate in full contact rugby. The highlight of this past year for Kai was representing the school under 15 football team against an Australian touring side, where despite being the youngest player on the pitch, he played a large part in a well earned victory. He is an inspiration to us all.

    To raise awareness of the Paralympic Games, Thornden school held a Paralympic morning with Paralympic swimmer Peter Hull MBE and Bronwin Carter, GB Paralympic throws coach. Activities offered included wheelchair basketball, sitting table tennis, volleyball, visually impaired football, running, archery, tennis, goalball, boccia and new age curling. The day began with a Paralympic and disability awareness presentation for year 8 students before they tried a selection of activities which year 9 students helped organize. Adult volunteers assisted from a range of organisations including WAMDSAD, Amputees in Action, Ability Vs Ability, EFDS, Blind Association, the FA, BBS Archery and England Athletics. It was a fantastic event and the school now include Paralympic sports in their mainstream PE curriculum.
